I am building a wildlife pond in an Hare’s Corner of my rewilding site and I was eager to get some expert advice. I filled out the contact form and received a prompt callback from Ann. I shared my plans and she discussed the options – I was keen to use the GCL strips and bentonite dust, as profiled recently on episode 6 of Réabhlóid ar Chúl on Tí, also featuring Ann. I shared a rough outline of my ponds dimensions and depth and Ann calculated the quantities required. The other option was also worked up: EPDM geomebrane with geotextile underlay, which sounded like a very valid second option. There was a minimal price differential and I opted for the bentonite clay path.

I have been impressed by the helpful and timely communication throughout, and I have just been advised the delivery is on its way.

I plan to dig the pond at the weekend, we will use the topsoil as a protective berm, we will lay the strips with overlap and dust and then cover with subsoil. Ann clearly outlined these steps for me. She has offered to be on standby for any questions as they arise using her products which is very generous of her.

If you want to add a wildlife pond i’d say just do it and get Ann to support you with her products and expertise.

Swim Pond in Ireland

Swimming in a chlorinated pool is refreshing and enjoyable on a hot day, but pales in comparison to the experience of swimming in a natural body of water. A swim in a natural pond does not leave you with itchy red eyes, dry skin or wanting a shower, which is common after swimming in chlorinated water.

Swim ponds are ponds that are laid in your garden as naturally as possible. Their attraction is derived especially from their natural appearance and a relatively low price.

If you create a evenly balanced ecosystem in your swim pond, you will find that the maintenance is very simple. The right kind of vegetation such as cattails, bulrushes, sedges, duckweed, and water lilies will use up the nutrients in your water that algae feeds on thus keeping down algae growth. You can also incorporate small fountains and waterfalls into your design to prevent stagnation.

Of course swim ponds, like all ponds, require careful installation with the correct site preparation and the most suitable, long-lasting pond liner, but if they are set up corrrectly from the start, then they are not as difficult to look after as you might think, and definitely worth considering, even in the Irish Summer!
